Inheritance vs. Composition in Socket Design

When building network-enabled applications, developers often face a design choice: should a SocketServer and SocketClient inherit from a shared BaseSocket class, or should they compose shared functionality?

While inheritance is the classic object-oriented approach, it often leads to rigid structures in networking code.

The Inheritance Trap

Using inheritance (class SocketServer(BaseSocket)) implies that the server is a specialized type of socket. While technically true, this often forces you to carry overhead that neither the client nor server needs, leading to a β€œfat” base class.

The Composition Alternative

Composition favors β€œhas-a” relationships. Instead of inheriting, your client and server have a socket connection. This allows for cleaner boundaries and easier testing.

Why Composition Wins in Networking:
