The Buffered Print Trap

When building command-line tools or monitoring scripts, developers often notice that print() statements don’t appear in the terminal immediately. This is not a delay in your logic; it is output buffering in action.

The Mechanism: Why Output Stalls

Python’s print() function is connected to sys.stdout. By default, Python (and the underlying C library) buffers output when it detects that it is writing to a pipe or a file rather than an interactive terminal.

The Scenario

  1. High-Frequency Logging: You are printing status updates in a loop.
  2. The Silent Wait: Because the output is being buffered, the operating system holds the data in memory until the buffer reaches a specific size (often 4KB or 8KB).
  3. The Illusion of Error: The script appears to be frozen or hung because the user sees no progress, even though the application is processing data correctly behind the scenes.

Solutions for Immediate Feedback

To ensure your terminal output is reflective of real-time events, you need to bypass or configure the buffer.

1. Flush the Buffer Explicitly

The most direct way to force the buffer to clear is to call flush() on the stdout stream.

2. Set Unbuffered Mode

You can set the flush parameter directly within the print function.

3. Environment-Level Control

If you want to disable buffering for the entire script (useful for logging inside Docker containers), use the -u flag when executing your Python file:

python -u my_script.py
