The Builder Design Pattern

The Builder Pattern is a creational design pattern used to construct complex objects step by step. Instead of using a constructor with a massive list of parameters, which leads to the “telescoping constructor” anti-pattern, the Builder allows you to produce different types and representations of an object using the same construction code.

The Problem: Telescoping Constructors

When an object has many optional parameters, developers often resort to creating multiple constructor variations:

# The Anti-pattern: Hard to read and maintain
class Computer:
    def __init__(self, cpu, ram, storage=None, gpu=None, os=None):
        ... # Too many parameters to track!

This becomes brittle as the object grows. Adding a new configuration requires updating multiple constructors or dealing with None values everywhere.

The Solution: The Builder

The Builder pattern separates the construction logic from the object representation.

Implementation Example

class Computer:
    def __init__(self):
        self.cpu = None
        self.ram = None
        self.storage = None

    def __str__(self):
        return f"Computer(CPU={self.cpu}, RAM={self.ram}, Storage={self.storage})"

class ComputerBuilder:
    def __init__(self):
        self.computer = Computer()

    def set_cpu(self, cpu):
        self.computer.cpu = cpu
        return self # Return self to allow method chaining

    def set_ram(self, ram):
        self.computer.ram = ram
        return self

    def set_storage(self, storage):
        self.computer.storage = storage
        return self

    def build(self):
        return self.computer

# Usage
pc = (ComputerBuilder()
      .set_cpu("Intel i9")
      .set_ram("32GB")
      .set_storage("1TB SSD")
      .build())

print(pc)
