Timeout Protections: Stopping the Indefinite Stall
A common failure mode in network programming is the “infinite hang.” If a server stops responding, your client might wait forever for a recv() call that will never return. Without a explicit timeout, your application process becomes a zombie, consuming resources while stuck in an I/O wait state.
The Problem: The Indefinite Block
By default, Python sockets are “blocking.” If the remote host crashes or the network path is severed without a proper connection reset, your application will hang on a read or write operation until the OS-level TCP timeout (which can be several minutes) kicks in.
The Solution: Setting the Deadline
The socket.settimeout() method allows you to define a clear deadline for any I/O operation. If the operation does not complete within that window, the socket raises a socket.timeout exception, which you can catch and handle gracefully.

Why Timeouts are Critical for Resilience

Best Practices
- Context-Aware Timeouts: Use short timeouts for simple pings and longer timeouts for heavy payload transfers. A
