Understanding Callables in Python
In Python, the term “callable” refers to any object that can be called using the parentheses () operator. While functions are the most common callables, Python’s object-oriented nature allows you to make your own class instances behave like functions.
What is a Callable?
You can verify if an object is callable using the built-in callable() function.
def my_func(): pass
print(callable(my_func)) # True
class MyClass: pass
print(callable(MyClass)) # True (the class constructor)
The Power of the __call__ Method
By defining the __call__ magic method in a class, you enable your instances to be invoked as functions. This is a powerful way to manage state within an object while providing a clean, functional interface.
Example: A Stateful Multiplier
Instead of a standard function that might require a global variable to track usage, a __call__ instance keeps its state encapsulated.
